Aspirating Smoke Detection in a Film Studio

The Challenge

A busy film studio presented a unique fire detection challenge. The facility contained large production areas, high ceilings, extensive lighting rigs, suspended equipment, set construction materials and areas where conventional point smoke detectors could be difficult to install, access and maintain.

The studio also needed to minimise false alarms and disruption to filming. Any unnecessary alarm could result in production delays, significant additional costs and disruption to cast and crew.

With a combination of valuable equipment, temporary film sets and constantly changing production environments, the client required a fire detection solution that was both highly sensitive and flexible.

The Solution

We designed and installed an aspirating smoke detection (ASD) system to provide continuous air sampling throughout the studio environment.

Rather than relying solely on conventional point detectors, the aspirating system continuously draws air through a network of sampling pipes. The sampled air is analysed by a highly sensitive detection chamber, allowing potential signs of smoke to be identified at an early stage.

Sampling points were strategically positioned throughout the studio to provide effective coverage while taking into consideration the building's height, ventilation, lighting rigs and changing set layouts.

The detection equipment was located in accessible areas, making routine inspection and maintenance considerably easier while keeping the visual impact within the studio to a minimum.

The completed aspirating smoke detection system provided the studio with a sophisticated and discreet method of protecting a challenging production environment.
